- چکیده انگلیسی: Background and objectives: Severe burn damage and its consequences are life threatening which can complicate patients’ health. Burn damage increases reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation which leads to severe damage to tissues and is implicated in burn shock. Some medicinal and traditional plants are considered as safe, natural and inexpensive sources for treatment of different of diseases. Pistacia atlantica has shown anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties and has also been used traditionally as an ointment for wound healing in some parts of Iran. In this study, the beneficial effect of P. atlantica resin oil on rats’ burn wound healing and its potential effects on vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), hydroxyproline and antioxidants in wound area was examined. Methods: Thirty male rats (200±10 g) were randomly and divided into three groups (n=10) as follow: Group 1: burn injury, Group 2: burn injury receiving 300 μL/kg/day P. atlantica resin oil topically, Group 3: burn injury receiving 300 mg/kg/day sulfadiazine cream topically. At the end of the study (day 14) the area of wounds were measured and then skins with burn damage were dissected and anti-oxidative parameters, VEGF and hydroxyproline were evaluated. Results: We found that Pistacia Atlantica oil significantly increased antioxidant defense, VEGF and hydroxyproline and reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. Pistacia atlantica remarkably reduced wound size compared to burn the control group and showed more beneficial effects compared to sulfadiazine as the positive control. Conclusion: Pistacia atlantica resin oil could be considered as a new therapeutic agent for treatment of injuries such as burn damages.

- کلمات کلیدی: Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Kinase 4 Endurance Training Metabolic Flexibility Estrogen,Related Receptor
- چکیده:
- چکیده انگلیسی: Background:Metabolic flexibility is the capacity of a system to adjust fuel (primarily glucose and fatty acids) oxidation based on nutrient availability. Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Kinase 4 (PDK4) is one of the main enzymes that play a critical role in metabolic flexibility. In current study, we examined PDK4 inhibition along with exercise training (ET) on the gene expression of Estrogen related-receptor alpha (ERRα), medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (MCAD), carnitine palmitoyl transferase-1b (CPT-1b), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PGC-1α), PDK4 and citrate synthase (CS) in skeletal muscle. Method:Sixty-four male Wistar rats (8 week-old) were randomly divided into 8 groups (n=8); 1- untreated control, 2- STZ-induced diabetic, 3- PDK4 inhibition, 4- endurance training (ET), 5- diabetic + PDK4 inhibition, 6- diabetic + ET, 7- PDK4 inhibition + ET, and 8- diabetic +ET + PDK4 inhibition. ERRα, MCAD, CPT-1b, PGC-1α, PDK4 and CS genes expressions were measured by Real-Time PCR and quantified by 2-ΔΔCt method. Results:ERRα, MCAD, CPT-1b, PGC-1α, PDK4, and CS expressions were significantly higher in non-diabetic+ Endurance Training group compared to the control group. The expressions of CPT-1b, MCAD and CS genes were significantly lower in the non-diabetic+ endurance training/PDK4 inhibition compared to the non-diabetic+ endurance training group, and the expressions of ERRα, CPT-1b and MCAD were significantly lower in the diabetic + PDK4 inhibition group compared to the diabetic group. Conclusion:In sum, PDK4 inhibition has negative effects on lipid metabolism in healthy rats, but in animals with diabetes, PDK4 inhibition can be used for improving lipid metabolism (over-expression of CS and PGC-1α).

- چکیده:
- چکیده انگلیسی: Introduction It has long been known that ionizing radiation can lead to detrimental effects in normal cells. In this light, Radioprotective chemicals have been used to decrease morbidity or mortality caused by ionizing irradiation. This study aimed to evaluate the radio-protective effect of N-acetylcysteineagainst radiation-induced mortality in male mice. Materials and Methods 52 healthy male mice were divided into four groups including NAC before irradiation (1), irradiation (2), NAC after irradiation (3) NAC before irradiation (4) and control. Three groups were treated orally with 100 mg/ kg of NAC. Gamma irradiation was performed at 8 Gy using a Co-60 machine. Kaplan-Meier method and the log-rank test were performed, using SPSS version 16. The significance level was considered to be 0.05. Results The statistical analysis revealed a significant difference between the test and control groups (P<0.05). The percentage of survival after 30 days was 46.2% for the irradiation group (1). In addition, the percentage of decreased lifespan was calculated at 5.90%, 23.60% and 17.93% for the first-third groups, respectively. Conclusion Results revealed lack of effectiveness of treatment with NAC after lethal dose. These results suggested that application of NAC for mice before irradiation protected them from the lethal effects of whole-body irradiation.

- چکیده:
- چکیده انگلیسی: Background: The use of waterpipe tobacco smoking (WTS) is on the rise throughout the world, especially
among young people and even athletes. There is a belief among consumers that exercise prevents the harmful
effects of hookah smoke on the body. We examined this belief by evaluation of lung injury following to
concurrent WTS and swimming endurance training in male Wistar rats.
Methods: Animals were randomly divided to sedentary control (CTL) group, exercise training group
(Ex group), sedentary WTS (S) group, and exercise plus WTS (S + Ex) group.
Findings: 8 weeks of WTS was associated with significant increase in serum level of cotinine, lung damage,
reduction in alveolar number AN/SA (mm2) and increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) level of lung tissue.
Combination of exercise with WTS significantly decreased these negative effects; however, it could not fully
protect the lung from smoking damage. Waterpipe smoking (WPS) also significantly increased the proinflammatory cytokines of lung tissue such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) (P < 0.001), interleukin 1
beta (IL-1β) (P < 0.010), and IL-6 (P < 0.050) in comparison with CTL group. Exercise training to some
degree reduced the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and increased the level of IL-10 as an antiinflammatory IL and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) activity in animals exposed to WTS.
Conclusion: It is suggested that combination of mild to moderate exercise with WTS may attenuate the
hookah smoking-induced lung damage. This effect partly is mediated through balancing of pro/antiinflammatory and redox systems

- چکیده انگلیسی: Background: There is an increasing popularity of waterpipe tobacco smoking (WTS) in youth and even in
athletes worldwide. Despite the existence of evidence of the harmful effects of hookah smoke on various
systems of the body, especially the cardiovascular system, its simultaneous effect with exercise training has
not been well studied. We assessed the effects of WTS exposure with/without swimming exercise on blood
pressure (BP), and heart histology and mechanical performance in male Wistar rats.
Methods: The animals were divided into 4 groups of sedentary control (CTL), waterpipe tobacco smoking (S),
mild endurance swimming exercise training (Ex), and waterpipe smoking plus exercise (S + Ex). The
duration of WTS and exercise was 8 weeks.
Findings: BP and heart rate (HR) did not show a significant difference among the groups. WTS increased the
TNF-α level of the heart (P < 0.05 vs. CTL) and cardiac tissue lesions (P < 0.05 vs. CTL), and reduced +dP/dt
max, -dp/dt max, and heart contractility indices (P < 0.01, P < 0.01, and P < 0.05, respectively, vs. CTL and
Ex groups). It also increased the Tau index (P < 0.05 vs. CTL; P < 0.01 vs. Ex groups) of the left ventricle.
However, the combination of exercise and WTS reduced the TNF-α level, improved the heart activity of
superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase enzymes, and prevented the negative effects of smoking on heart
function and morphology.
Conclusion: Mild exercise prevents WTS-induced left ventricular systolic and diastolic dysfunction partly via
improvement of antioxidants and attenuation of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
