- چکیده انگلیسی: BACKGROUND AND AIM: Ectopic eruption (EE) of the permanent first molars (PFMs) results from a discrepancy between the jaw growth rate and the growth rate of these teeth. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the prevalence of EE of PFMs in Kerman, Iran, and then determine the relationship between growth parameters (height and weight) and this developmental anomaly.METHODS: In the present study, 2025 children aged 6-9 years were examined to determine the prevalence of eruption of PFMs. Examinations were carried out with the use of tongue depressors under adequate light. Height and weight were determined in the control (without EE of PFM) and the case (with EE of PFM) groups, and then registered in the relevant checklist. Descriptive statistical methods were used for the analysis of qualitative data at a confidence interval (CI) of 95%. Chi-squared test was used for comparisons between the two groups in relation to age and gender.RESULTS: In the present study, prevalence of the EE of PFMs was 2.8% in 6 to 9-year-old children in Kerman. The rate of this developmental anomaly was higher in boys compared to girls and higher in the maxilla than in the mandible; however, the differences were not significant (P > 0.05). The prevalence of EE was higher in children with a lower mean age and a lower mean height and weight, which was significant statistically (P < 0.05). EE was more common unilaterally than bilaterally, but the difference was not significant (P > 0.05). In addition, there was no significant relationship between cleft palate or lip and EE (P > 0.05).CONCLUSION: Children in the lower than normal height and weight percentile are more susceptible to the EE developmental anomaly.

- چکیده انگلیسی: BACKGROUND AND AIM: Perception of the need for oral healthcare plays a key role in creating motivation and demand for utilization of oral healthcare services. Furthermore, while the lack of resources, people with perceived needs to oral healthcare, due to the higher profit potential of services, will be on higher priority for services. The aim of this study was to undertake a systematic review of the existing literature about questionnaires used for assessing the perceived oral healthcare needs.METHODS: The search was conducted in PubMed, ISI and Scopus databases in March 2016. Questionnaire-based and the papers which aimed to determine the perceived need for any type of oral healthcare and dental treatment were included to this study. After determining the appropriate papers, related data were extracted and reviewed.RESULTS: Out of 7069 records found, 190 questionnaire-based papers were included in the review. Ninety-four papers were related to the overall evaluation of oral healthcare need, which did not ask the need for types of oral healthcare service. Sixty-six papers studied the need for a specified dental service, and thirty papers recorded the types of oral healthcare service via asking the open or multiple choices questions. There were not comprehensive and standard questionnaires covering all the common types of oral healthcare services.CONCLUSION: Despite the importance of considering the perception of needs for oral healthcare, there is a lack of the comprehensive and standard questionnaires. Studies aimed to assess perceived oral healthcare needs should use questionnaires which include appropriate items on common types of oral healthcare services based on the characteristics of the target group. Concordance with perceived and normative need is an issue that should be addressed in future researches.

- چکیده انگلیسی: BACKGROUND AND AIM: Oral diseases are very important because they impose economic and social burden on societies. Given the resource scarcity, it is necessary to devise cost-effective and scientific strategies to prevent and control oral diseases. This study aimed to estimate the potential cost-savings for dental caries treatment associated with Community Water Fluoridation Program (CWFP) in Kerman, Iran.METHODS: An economic model to compare the costs of CWFP with treatment savings achieved through averted tooth decay was developed. Direct cost of prevented caries was taken equal to treatment savings. Implementation cost and the associated savings was estimated for Kerman in 2016. We obtained required data and parameters for costs and savings estimation through published documents and other sources.RESULTS: Annual cost-savings associated with implementing the water fluoridation in Kerman was estimated about $11160415.5 to $44350544.11. About $34.9 to $136 could be achieved per each dollar spent. Annual cost and benefit per capita was $0.66 and $23.4-$91.09 respectively. Net benefit per capita was $22.7 to $90.4.CONCLUSION: This study indicates significant annual savings from CWFP; additional savings could be achieved if this program is implemented in other regions. We could also receive even more if this program is integrated with other public oral health programs such as screening school children, community dentistry and oral health education.

- چکیده انگلیسی: BACKGROUND AND AIM: Oral health is an integral part of general health. Between the different medical professions, pharmacists are one of the groups who encounter patients seeking consultation in the oral health field a lot. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the knowledge and practice of pharmacists in Kerman, Iran, toward oral health.METHODS: All pharmacists were invited to participate in the study after being informed about the aims of the study. A validated questionnaire with six sections including demographic data, oral hygiene behavior of the participants, the pharmacies’ specifications and products related to oral health, questions related to knowledge, questions related to practice, and questions related to the participants’ assessment were filled out by the participants. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS software, and descriptive results were presented in tables and charts. The chi-square statistical tests were used to explore any association between variables.RESULTS: Data were analyzed for 81 participants. Most of the participants were male and the mean age was 38 ± 10. The pharmacists’ mean knowledge of oral health was 6.5 out of 10 which places them in the medium knowledge range. The performance of pharmacists when encountering oral problems was prescribing analgesics in 79% of cases for tooth aches. There was no statistically significant difference in the knowledge score between different age and gender groups (P = 0.500).CONCLUSION: The results show a medium knowledge of pharmacists on oral health topics. Considering their own desire plans to train and educate in oral health fields to promote oral health seem necessary.
