These anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties were evaluated against experimentally induced inflammation and pains using standard models. Experimental: The effects of ethanol leaf extract of Zea mays (170 -510 mg/kg) on experimentally induced inflammation and pain were studied in rats using Carrageenin, egg albumin and xylene-induced inflammation as well as acetic acid-induced writhing and thermal induced pain models. The GCMS analysis of the most active fraction was carried out. Results: The extract (170 -520 mg/kg) inhibited inflammation and pains caused by different phlogistic agents used in a dose dependent fashion. The various degrees of inhibitions were statistically significant (p<0.05, 0.01, 0.001), though incomparable to that of the standard drugs used (ASA and indomethacin). The GC-MS revealed the present of polyunsaturated fatty acids and phenolic compounds which may be responsible for the observed activities of the extract. Recommended applications/industries: The present study demonstrates that leaf extract of Zea mays might to be useful for the treatment of inflammation and pains.

- چکیده: مقدمه و هدف: Solenostemon monostachyus هنوز اهمیت خود را به عنوان یک گیاه دارویی سنتی در درمان برخی از بیماریها از جمله دیابت ملیتوس در بین مردمان ایبی بیو از دست نداده است. البته بسیاری از این ادعاهای دارویی هنوز نیاز به تایید از نظر علوم دارویی دارند. بنابراین هدف در این تحقیق استفاده از عصاره Solenostemon monostachyus برای کنترل دیابت در یک ارزیابی علمی بوده است. روش تحقیق: عصاره خام و فراکشنهایS. monostachyus (225-75 میلی گرم در کیلوگرم) برای ارزیابی فعالیت ضد دیابتی در موشهای دیابتی شده با آلوکسان مورد بررسی قرار گرفته و فعالیت ضد دیابتی در مطالعات حاد و بلند مدت ارزیابی شد. از گلی بن کلامید به میزان 10 میلی گرم در کیلوگرم به عنوان نمونه کنترل مثبت استفاده شد. سطح گلوکز خون(BGL) با استفاده از گلوکومتر اندازه گیری شده و سطح لیپیدهای مختلف با استفاده از کیتهای شناسایی Randox تخمین زده شد. نتایج و بحث: تیمار موشهای دیابتی شده با آلوکسان توسط عصاره/فراکشنهای عصاره باعث کاهش معنی داری (P<0.001) در BGL در مطالعات حاد و بلند مدت شد( دو هفته). فعالیت عصاره و فراکشنها قابل مقایسه با گروه گلی بن کلامید در بلند مدت بود. تیمار با S. monostachyus باعث کاهش قابل توجه در کلسترول کل، تری گلیسریدها، LDL، VLDL و افزایش در HDL در گروه دیابتی تیمار شده شد. توصیه های کاربردی/ صنعتی: نتایج نشان داد که عصاره S. monostachyus دارای تاثیرات ضد دیابتی و کاهنده چربی بر روی موشهای دیابتی شده باآلوکسان است که می تواند به منظور کنترل دیابت مورد بهره برداری قرار گیرد.
- چکیده انگلیسی: Background & Aim: Solenostemon monostachyus has remain invincible in Ibibio ethnomedicine for the management of numerous ailment including diabetes mellitus. Many of these ethnomedicinal claims are yet to be pharmacologically verified. The purpose of this study therefore was to subject the extract/fractions of Solenostemon monostachyus used in folkloric management of diabetes to scientific assay. Experimental: The crude extract and fractions of S. monostachyus (75 -225 mg/kg) were evaluated for antidiabetic activity in alloxan – induced diabetic rats. The antidiabetic activity during acute and prolong studies were investigated. Glibenclamide, 10 mg/kg, was used as positive control. The Blood Glucose Level (BGL) was measured by using a glucometer and the various lipids level were estimated using Randox diagnostic kits. Results & Discussion: Treatment of alloxan diabetic rats with the extract/fractions caused a significant (P<0.001) reductions in BGL of the diabetic rats both in acute and prolong treatment (2 weeks). The activities of extract and fractions were comparable to that of glibenclamide in prolonged study. S. monostachyus treatment showed considerable lowering of serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, VLDL cholesterol and an increase in HDL cholesterol in the treated diabetic group. Industrial and practical recommendations: These results suggest that the extract of S. monostachyus possesses antidiabetic and hypolipidaemic effect on alloxan-induced diabetic rats which can be exploited in the management of diabetes.

- چکیده: مقدمه و هدف: Homalium letestui که به طور سنتی توسط مردم ایبی بیو در جنوب نیجریه برای درمان زخم معده، مالاریا و سایر بیماریها استفاده می شود جهت بررسی ویژگیهای ممانعت کنندگی از ایجاد زخم معده مورد مطالعه قرار گرفت. روش تحقیق: تاثیر عصاره اتانولی ساقه (600-200 میلی گرم در کیلوگرم) و فراکشنها (آبی و دی کلرومتان؛ 400 میلی گرم در کیلوگرم) در زخم القا شده در شرایط آزمایشگاهی مورد مطالعه قرار گرفت. نتایج و بحث: عصاره (600-200 میلی گرم در کیلوگرم) از ایجاد زخم القا شده در مدلهای اتانول، ایندومتاسین، رزرپین و هیستامین به صورت وابسته به دوز ممانعت کرد و درجات ممانعت کنندگی از نظرآماری (p<0.05, 0.01, 0.001) معنی دار بودند. تاثیر عصاره قابل مقایسه با داروهای استاندارد مورد استفاده در مدلهای زخم القا شده توسط ایندومتاسین و اتانول بود و فراکشنهای به دست آمده توسط دی کلرومتان بیشترین فعالیت را داشتند. توصیه های کاربردی/صنعتی: این تحقیق نشان داد که عصاره ساقه Homalium letestui می تواند در درمان زخم موثر باشد.

Experimental: The effects of ethanol stem extract of H. letestui (200 – 600 mg/kg) and fractions (Aqueous and Dichloromethane, 400 mg/kg) on experimentally induced ulcer were studied in rats using ethanol, indomethacin, reserpine and histamine –induced ulcer models. Results & Discussion: The extract (200 – 600 mg/kg) inhibited ethanol, indomethacin, reserpine and histamine –induced ulcer models in a dose dependent fashion. The various degrees of inhibitions were statistically significant (p<0.05, 0.01, 0.001). The effects of the extract/fraction were comparable to that of the standard drugs used in indomethacin and ethanol-induced ulcer models with the dichloromethane fraction having the highest activity. Industrial and practical recommendations: The present study demonstrates that stem extract of Homalium letestui might to be useful for the treatment of ulcer.

- چکیده انگلیسی: Objective: Solenostemon monostachyus is used in traditional medicine for the treatment of various ailments such as ulcer, hypertension, pains and inflammatory diseases. Evaluation of anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities of S. monostachyus aerial parts was carried out to ascertain its uses in traditional medicine.
Materials and Methods: The aerial parts of S. monostachyus was cold extracted by soaking the dried powdered material in ethanol. The aerial parts crude extract (75 –225 mg/kg) of S. monostachyus was investigated for analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities using various experimental models; acetic acid, formalin and thermal- induced pains models for analgesic study and carrageenin, egg albumin and xylene – induced edema models for anti-inflammatory investigation.
Results: The extract caused a significant (pConclusion: The anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of this plant may in part be mediated through the chemical constituents of the plant and the results of the analgesic action suggest central and peripheral mechanisms. - چکیده انگلیسی: Objective: Homalium letestui Pellegr (Flacourtiaceae) is used in traditional medicine in parts of Nigeria for the treatment of malaria, ulcer, and inflammatory diseases and as an aphrodisiac. This investigation was aimed to evaluate the cytotoxic, immunomodulatory, and antileishmanial properties of stem extract and fractions of Homalium letestui (H. letestui).
Materials and Methods: Cytotoxic activity against HeLa cells was done using sulphorhodamine (SRB) method and DNA interaction activity using gel electrophoresis. Immunomodulatory activity of the extract in whole blood, neutrophils, and macrophages was also investigated using luminol/lucigenin-based chemiluminescence assay. The extract and fractions were similarly screened for antileishmanial activity against promastigotes of Leishmania major in vitro. The GCMS analysis of the most active fraction against HeLa cells was carried out.
Results: The stem extract exerted prominent cytotoxic activity with the dichloromethane fraction exhibiting the most pronounced effect (GI50 -5.12±1.45 µg/ml, LC50- 57.3±2.33 µg/ml, TGI -12.6±0.87 µg/ml). The crude extract and the fractions did not interact with DNA when investigated using electrophoresis. The extract significantly ((pLeishmania major in vitro. GCMS analysis of active fraction revealed pharmacologically active compounds.

The aim of this study is to determine the hepatoprotective effects of ethanol extract of H. letestui stem (250-750 mg/kg) on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver injury in rats. Methods: A total of 36 rats were divided into six groups of 6 animals each. Group 1 was administered with normal saline (10 ml/kg) for eight days, group 2 received CCl4, group 3 served as the standard group, while groups 4, 5 and 6 were administered p.o with 250, 500 and 750 mg/kg of H. letestui stem extract, respectively, for 8 days. Liver function and histopathological parameters were investigatesd to assess hepatoprotective activity of the extract. Results: Administration of the stem extract (250-750 mg/kg body weight) caused significant (P<0.05 – 0.001) reductions in levels of liver enzymes (ALT, AST and ALP), total cholesterol, direct and total bilirubin and elevation of serum levels of total protein and albumin. Optimal effects on most parameters were observed at 500 mg/kg dose. The effects of the extract/fraction were comparable to that of the standard drug used. Thus, the local use of this plant, at appropriate doses, as an antidote could be supported. Conclusions: The plant may provide protection against substances that react with membrane lipids to induce peroxidation and subsequent dysfunction of membranes by acting as an effective scavenger of reactive oxygen species. This positive effect may be similar to the established effects of certain substances such as silymarin, vitamin E, vitamin C and other free radical scavengers that reduce the toxic effects of CCl4, especially on the liver.

- چکیده انگلیسی: Background and aims: The kidney is a very vital organ that is responsible for regular elimination of unwanted substances from the body. It is frequently exposed to conditions that expose it to damage. There are not enough drugs in the market to protect or treat the kidney against these deleterious conditions. Homalium letestui has been used in traditional medicine as an antidote. This study aims to investigate the nephroprotective activity of ethanol stem extract of Homalium lestetui against gentamicin-induced rat’s kidney injury. Methods: Thirty-six (36) adult male albino rats were used for this study. Animals in group I served as the control with normal saline, group II received gentamicin (100 mg/kg), group III received Silymarin (100 mg/kg), while group IV, V and VI where administered 250, 500 and 750 mg/kg of ethanol stem extract of Homalium letestui along with gentamicin 100 mg/kg for 8 days. The nephroprotective effect of the extract was evaluated by the assay of kidney function parameters such as serum urea, creatinine, electrolytes (K+, Na+, Cl- and HCO-3) and histopathological examination of the kidney. Results: Homalium letestui caused significant p≤ 0.05 dose-dependent reduction in the level of serum urea, creatinine, and electrolytes in rat’s kidney when compared to the control. The chemical pathological changes were consistent with histopathological observations suggesting marked the nephroprotective effect of the stem extract of H. letestui. Conclusion: The result of the study suggests that the plant has kidney protective ability which supports its traditional use as an antidote
