- چکیده انگلیسی: Graphene quantum dots (GQDs), which are the most capable carbon-based nanostructures, play a significant role in biological studies. These nanostructures show significant attributes including low toxicity, high solubility in numerous solvents, notable electronic characteristics, strong chemical inertness, high specific surface areas, and abundant sites for functionalization. In addition, GQDs have adaptability as well as capability to be improved via absorbent surface chemicals as well as the addition of modifiers or nanoparticles. Accordingly, we have presented here the fundamental properties, synthesis techniques, and the applications of GQDs in biosensing, bioimaging, and drug delivery. It is worth mentioning that toxicity is a significant issue which has restricted biological applications of QDs. Hence, the toxicological features of GQDs have been covered in this review paper.

- چکیده انگلیسی: Background: Pseudoexfoliation syndrome is one of the most common identifiable causes of open angle glaucoma. It has unknown etiology and pathogenesis. Infection, possibly viral, is one of the proposed pathogenic mechanisms in this condition. In the present study the presence of herpes simplex virus (HSV) in specimens of anterior lens capsule of patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome has been assessed. Methods: The presence of HSV- DNA was searched by using polymerase chain reaction method in specimens of anterior lens capsule (5 mm diameter) of 50 patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (study group) and 50 age-matched patients without the disease (control group) who underwent cataract or combined cataract and glaucoma surgery during a one-year (2006-2007) period in Khalili Hospital, Shiraz, Iran. The results were compared statistically with Chi-square test and independent samples t test using SPSS software (version 11.5). Results: HSV type I DNA was detected in 18% of the patients in the study group compared with 2% in the control group (Chi square test, P = 0.008). The difference between the ranges of intraocular pressure in the two groups was not statistically significant. Conclusion: The presence of HSV type I DNA suggests the possible relationship between the virus and pseudoexfoliation syndrome. It may be a treatable etiology in this multi-factorial disorder and may help to future management of patients; especially to prevent some of the complications in this syndrome.

- چکیده انگلیسی: The analysis of viscoelastic materials is one of the most important subjects in engineering structures. Several works have been so far made for the integral equation methods to viscoelastic problems. From the basic assumptions of viscoelastic constitutive equations and weighted residual techniques, a simple but effective Boundary Element (BE) formulation is developed for the Kelvin viscoelastic solid models. This formulation needs only Kelvin’s fundamental solution of isotropic elastostatics with material constants prescribed as explicit functions of time. It is able to solve the quasistatic problems with any load time-dependence and boundary conditions. A system of time-dependent equations is derived by imposing the convenient approximations and adopting the kinematical relations for strain rates. This approach avoids the use of relaxation functions and mathematical transformations. The main feature of the proposed formulation is the absence of domain discretizations, which simplifies the treatment of problems involving infinite domains. A computer code has been developed in the programming environment of MATLAB software. At the end of this paper, two numerical examples have been provided to validate this formulation.

- چکیده انگلیسی: Objective: Barberry root extract contains various alkaloids that are considered as antioxidants. Beneficial effect of aqueous extract of Berberis integerrima root (AEBIR) was evaluated for renal function in diabetic rats induced by STZ.
Material and Methods: Diabetes was induced by i.p. injection of streptozotocin (65 mg/kg bw) to rats, after 15 h of fasting. Diabetic rats were randomly grouped and treateddaily with AEBIR and glibenclamide by gavage for 42 days. After 6 weeks of study, all the rats were sacrificed and some biochemical parameters of serum and urine were measured and their kidneys tissues were processed for light microscopy.
Results: Streptozotocin induced a significant rise in fasting blood glucose, serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, urine glucose, urine protein, urine albumin, and water intake and a significant decrease in body weight, serum protein, urine urea, and urine creatinine. There was a significant restoration of these parameters to near normal after administration of the AEBIR and also by glibenclamide (0.6 mg/kg bw). The activity of the extract at dose of 500 mg/kg in all parameters except blood glucose and urine glucose was more than that of the standard drug, glibenclamide (0.6 mg/kg, p.o.). Histopathological changes of kidney samples were comparable with respective control.
Conclusion: These results suggested that aqueous extract of Berberis Integerrima root improves renal dysfunction in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats through controlling blood glucose and renal protective effects.- انتشار مقاله: 04-05-1391
