- چکیده انگلیسی: Background: Nowadays, the use of herbal medicine for the treatment of different diseases especially during pregnancy is increasing. It was shown that some herbs have irreparable effects on fetal development and on pregnancy. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of aqueous extract of Berberis vulgaris on fetal height and weight during pregnancy.
Methods: One-hundred and twenty adult female mice were enrolled. After confirmation of pregnancy, they were divided to four groups evaluated during first, second and third week of pregnancy. The control group mice were pregnant without any intervention. The second, third and fourth group received 2000, 3500 and 5000 mg/kg of barberry, respectively. The fetal weight and height were measured in each group and compared.
Results: In the first, second and third week of gestation, 5000 mg/kg of barberry decreased the embryo’s weight and height in comparison to other groups.
Conclusion: The high dose of barberry resulted in adverse effects on fetal growth
especially in the last week of pregnancy. Therefore, it should be administered with caution during gestation period.- انتشار مقاله: 13-10-1396

- چکیده انگلیسی: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) denotes to two principal groups of chronic relapsing inflammatory intestinal disorders including ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). Medications are considered as the first-line of treatment in IBD management. Surgery as the second line of therapy is considered for patients who are intolerant to medications, but response rates continue to remain suboptimal and it is necessary to assess environmental factors such as diet that may not only help improve response to conventional therapy. Many patients with IBD reported that diet can affect the disease symptoms, employing avoidance diets while in remission. This review assessed food avoidance in patients with ulcerative colitis.

- چکیده انگلیسی: Background and Purpose: Aromatic waters (AWs) are therapeutic distillates, which harbor both essential oil and water-soluble components of a plant. Due to the dispersion of the light amount of essence through the AWs, they have their specific pleasant smell, taste, and medicinal properties. In Iranian traditional medicine, Trachyspermum ammi AW is used to treat gastrointestinal disorders. The present study was conducted to determine the chemical composition of the essential oil extracted from T. ammi AW and its antifungal activities against Candida species.
Materials and Methods: The composition of the essential oil extracted from T. ammi AW was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. In addition, the evaluation of the antifungal activity of AW against Candida species was performed using broth microdilution methods as recommended by the Clinical Laboratory Standard Institute. Moreover, the biofilm formation inhibition, antioxidant properties, and experimental activity of AW were determined in an animal model.
Results: According to the results, thymol (78.08%) was the major compound of EO, followed by carvacrol (8.20%) and carvotanacetone (6.50%). Furthermore, T. ammi AW exhibited antifungal activities against the examined fungi and inhibited the biofilm formation of C. albicans at a concentration of up to 0.25 V/V. Histopathological analyses revealed that Candida colonization declined in the mice following the administration of T. ammi AW in a therapeutic trial.
Conclusion: It seems that the presence of phenolic monoterpenes in AW has resulted in antifungal effects. Pleasant odor and antioxidant properties are extra bonuses to the antimicrobial effects of this plant. Based on the findings, AW might have the potential to be used in the management of alimentary candidiasis or oral hygienic products.

- چکیده انگلیسی: Background: Meningioma and glioma are common central nervous system tumors. Hypoxic tumor cells secrete angiogenic cytokines, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) that stimulate neovascular formation and inflammatory cytokine, such as TNF-α and IL-1β. We measured these serum levels in patients with glial cell tumors and meningioma. Materials and Methods: This was a case-control study in 2014-2015 on patients diagnosed with meningioma/glioma. All demographic and clinical data were registered. The tumor volume and intraoperative bleeding were recorded. Serum levels of VEGF, PDGF, FGF, TNF-α and IL-1β were measured by ELISA methods. Results: Ninety-six patients were enrolled in this study, 32 in each group. Patients VEGF level with cranial tumor, glioma/meningioma had increased. VEGF level was highest among grade IV tumors, larger tumors, and in glioblastoma multiform. There was an upsurge in VEGF serum level as glioma grade increased. The highest VEGF levels were seen in parasagittal meningioma. In contrast to VEGF, PDGF was slightly elevated in glial cell tumors, which was significantly elevated in meningioma. Higher PDGF correlated with increased intraoperative bleeding, especially in meningioma cases. Oligodendroglial tumors expressed higher PDGF levels in contrast to other glial tumors. FGF level was not statistically significant. TNF-α and IL-1β expressions were significantly higher in the meningioma and glioma group in comparison to control group. Conclusion: We found increased VEGF and PDGF serum levels in CNS patient’s tumor. A different role for PDGF was found in the pathogenesis of neovascularization of meningioma, as well as oligodendroglioma. No significant result was found for FGF. TNF-α and IL-1β can serve as key prognostic biomarker in high-grade glioma and meningioma patients.

- چکیده انگلیسی: Background: Positive and negative co-stimulatory molecules are important factors determining the outcome
of immune responses to the presence of tumors. Since co-stimulatory molecule expression may be affected by gene
polymorphisms, we aimed to investigate associations between variants of PD.1 and ICOS and susceptibility to colon
cancer. Material and methods: ICOS (-693A/G), ICOS (+1720C/T) and PD.1 (-538G/A) gene polymorphisms were
evaluated by the PCR-RFLP method in 76 colon cancer patients and 73 healthy controls. Results: The frequencies
of the GG genotype and the G allele at position -693 of the ICOS gene were significantly higher in the patient group
(P=0.014 and p=0.0002), while the AA genotype was significantly more common in controls (P=0.0016). At position
-538 of PD.1, GG genotype and G allele frequencies were higher in the patient group (PAA and also AG genotypes significantly predominated in controls (Pand alleles of ICOS at position +1720. Frequencies of GCG and GTG haplotypes were higher in patients compared
to those of controls (P=0.016 and P<0.0001), while, frequencies of GTA, ATA and ATG haplotypes were higher in
controls (P=0.0017, Ppatients compared to controls (P=0.0147 and P=0.0071). Conclusion: Our study clarified that PD.1 (-538G/A) and
ICOS (-693A/G) gene polymorphisms can be considered as genetic risk factors for the development of colon cancer

Background: Thyroidectomy, radioactive iodine therapy, chemotherapy, or their combination are treatments of choice for thyroid cancers. However, cancer stem cells (CSCs) may become resistant to therapy, and mutations in somatic genes affect radioiodine uptake. This study determined the effect of a phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K) inhibitor on anaplastic thyroid CSCs. Materials and Methods: The magnetic-activated cell sorting assay was used for segregating CD133-positive CSCs from three anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) cell lines (C643, SW1736, and 8305C). After confirming the cells’ purity by flow cytometry, they were treated with 5, 10, 20, or 25 μM LY294002, a PI3K inhibitor, and then evaluated at 24 and 48 h. The sodium-iodide symporter (NIS) mRNA level was determined using the quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. NIS protein expression was evaluated using western blotting. Results: The PI3K inhibitor, at different concentrations and times, increased the NIS mRNA level (1.30-6.17-fold, P < 0.0001). If the NIS mRNA level in LY294002-treated CD133-positive CSCs was increased more than 2-fold, the NIS protein content was detectable. Conclusions: CD133-positive CSCs isolated from ATC cell lines expressed NIS mRNA and protein after PI3K inhibition. Our findings suggest that molecularly targeted CSC therapy may improve the treatment efficacy of aggressive cancers like ATC.- انتشار مقاله: 27-03-1396
