- چکیده:
- چکیده انگلیسی: Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a heterogeneous malignancy originating from proliferation of lymphoid cells or their precursors. , we report a case of a 6-year-old Iranian male child admitted at the Department of Oral Medicine, School of Dentistry, Mashhad, Iran, in March 2019. The case was complaining about gingival swellings worsening for one month. Clinical and pathologic examination, complemented by biopsy and immunohistochemistry, confirmed the diagnosis of high-grade B-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Treatment was based on chemotherapy. Intraoral involvement of lymphomas might be confused with inflammatory diseases; therefore the dentist has a crucial role in early diagnosis for appropriate management of the disease.

- چکیده انگلیسی: Background: Medical error is defined as an adverse event caused by medical management, which can be prevented. The aim of this study was to investigate the accuracy of diagnosis of oral and maxillofacial diseases made by health care practitioners.
Methods: A descriptive cross sectional study was done between Apr. 2009 and Mar.2010. 372 Patients with oral and maxillofacial lesions who had referred to oral medicine Department of Mashhad dental school or had examined by health care practitioners were examined by two oral medicine specialists and a self established questionnaire was completed. The main aim of this questionnaire was to investigate the accuracy of diagnosis of oral and maxillofacial diseases made by health care practitioners. Histopathologic evaluation was made to achieve a definite diagnosis.
Results: Only 30/6% of initial diagnoses were consistent with the diagnosis made by oral medicine specialists. Lichen planus and inflammatory hyperplasia have been the most common diseases which health care practitioners did not mention a diagnosis for them.Among the most common misdiagnosis lichen planus and abscess each involved 8 percent of misdiagnosis.
Conclusions: Unfortunately in present study there was little compatibility between diagnosis of dentists and practitioners with oral medicine specialist. Sometimes misdiagnosis results in postponing the treatment, patients` suffering and leads to side effects of unnecessary or incorrect treatment. As old people are more susceptible to oral diseases and lesions, there should be a holistic effort to find the cause of present problems and then resolving them through educational promoting and expanding the teamwork among physicians to diagnosis and treatment of the patients.- انتشار مقاله: 27-03-1393

- چکیده:
- چکیده انگلیسی: Background: The cigarette compounds are associated with the increase in the incidence of oral cancer and
precancerous lesions. Salivary antioxidant system plays an important role in anti-carcinogenic capacity of
saliva. Cotinine, a nicotine metabolite, has a longer half-life in comparison with nicotine and is a suitable
marker for exposure to cigarette smoke. This study aims to measure total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and
cotinine level in saliva of smokers and non-smokers and compare salivary cotinine level and TAC in each grou.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 32 smokers and 34 non-smokers were recruited by consecutive
sampling from Department of Oral Medicine, School of Dentistry, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences,
Mashhad, Iran. Salivary cotinine and TAC concentrations were determined using the enzyme-linked
immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique. For data analysis, correlation tests of Spearman, Mann-Whitney
U, and independent samples t-test were used.
Findings: A significant difference was observed between the two groups in the mean cotinine level and in the
mean TAC (P = 0.015, P = 0.027, respectively). TAC showed a weak negative correlation with the cotinine
level, but the difference was not significant (P = 0.651).
Conclusion: Antioxidants are of great importance to smokers because antioxidants are able to scavenge free
radicals found in cigarette smoke. According to the results of present study, the salivary TAC in smokers was
lower than that of non-smokers, and the salivary cotinine level in smokers was higher than non-smokers.
Therefore, smoking endangers the oral cavity health by reducing the salivary TAC. Further studies with a
higher sample size and other factors affecting the salivary TAC are needed for definitive comment.
