- چکیده انگلیسی: Background: Given the variations in clinical presentation and physiopathological mechanisms in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) subtypes, it is an acknowledged fact that the response to treatments can be disparate. Objective: To assess the effect of vitamin D on inflammatory cytokines (IL-17, IL-10, TNF-α), and biomarkers of oxidative stress (total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and malondialdehyde (MDA)) among IBS patients. Methods: A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled 6-month intervention study was carried out on 90 IBS patients (85 were analyzed), as defined by the Rome III criteria. Study participants were randomly assigned to receive either 50,000 IU vitamin D3 or a placebo fortnightly. Results: Vitamin D supplementation significantly reduced the IL-17 and MDA serum levels (P<0.05) and observably increased the TAC and IL-10 serum levels (P<0.05), compared with the placebo group. Comparing different bowel habit subtypes, we observed that it was only in diarrhea predominant IBS (IBS-D) that vitamin D supplementation was able to significantly reduce the serum levels of TNF-α and IL-17 (P<0.05). However, in all subtypes, IL-10 and TAC increased, while MDA decreased (P<0.05) in vitamin D group, compared to the placebo group. Conclusion: Vitamin D3 supplementation reduces the serum IL-17 and MDA levels, and augments the serum IL-10 and TAC levels in IBS patients, particularly in IBS-D subtype. Thus, the present study demonstrates the beneficial effects of vitamin D on patients with IBS-D.

- چکیده انگلیسی: Objective(s): Several lines of evidence showed that minocycline possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study aimed to demonstrate the effects of minocycline in rats subjected to chronic constriction injury (CCI).
Materials and Methods: In this study four groups (n = 6–8) of rats were used as follows: Sham, CCI, CCI + minocycline (MIN) 10 mg/Kg (IP) and CCI + MIN 30 mg/Kg (IP). On days 3, 7, 14, and 21 post-surgery hot-plate, acetone, and von Frey tests were carried out. Finally, Motor Nerve Conduction Velocity Evaluation (MNCV) assessment was performed and spinal cords were harvested in order to measure tissue concentrations of TNF_α, IL-1β, Glutathione peroxidase (GPx), Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and Malondialdehyde (MDA). Extent of perineural inflammation and damage around the sciatic nerve was histopathologically evaluated.
Results: Our results demonstrated that CCI significantly caused hyperalgesia and allodynia twenty-one days after CCI. MIN attenuated heat hyperalgesia, cold and mechanical allodynia and MNCV in animals. MIN also decreased the levels of TNF_α and IL-1β. Antioxidative enzymes (SOD, MDA, and GPx) were restored following MIN treatment. Our findings showed that MIN decreased perineural inflammation around the sciatic nerve. According to the results, the neuropathic pain reduced in the CCI hyperalgesia model using 30 mg/kg of minocycline.
Conclusion: It is suggested that antinociceptive effects of minocycline might be mediated through the inhibition of inflammatory response and attenuation of oxidative stress.- انتشار مقاله: 22-03-1396

- چکیده انگلیسی: Background: During the lactation period, mothers are at an increased risk of nutritional deficiencies due to improper dietary patterns, physiological changes, and various socio-demographic factors. The present study aimed to examine the nutritional status, dietary intake, and related factors among lactating women in the urban and rural areas of Khorramabad, Lorestan province in the southwest of Iran.
Methods: The present population-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Khorramabad (Iran) during April-July 2012. The study population included 708 lactating mothers who were referred to the health centers in Khorramabad (10 urban health centers and 30 rural health/community centers). A multi-stage sampling method was used to recruit the participants. The nutritional status and food intake of the participants were assessed over three days using the 24-hour dietary recall (24HDR) and dietary record (DR) questionnaires. The data were analyzed using SPSS software (version 16.0) with the Chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test, paired t test, independent t test, and Pearson correlation coefficient. PResults: The mean age and body mass index (BMI) of the mothers were 29.78±6.24 years and 26.11±3.70 kg/m2, respectively. There was a significant difference in calorie intake between the different categories of age, BMI, education level, job status (P<0.001) and lactation stage (P=0.034). The energy and nutrient intakes, except iron and phosphor, were statistically lower (P<0.05) than the prescribed Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA). The intake of vitamins K, B1, B2, B3, and C; protein, magnesium, phosphor, zinc, copper, and iodine by mothers in the rural areas was significantly higher (P<0.05) than those in the rural areas. Higher intakes of energy and macronutrients by the lactating mothers had a significant negative correlation with an increase in age and had a significant positive correlation with a higher BMI (P<0.001).
Conclusion: Lactating women in the urban and rural areas of Khorramabad (Iran) had a poor nutritional status. Nutrition education and a modified dietary pattern during the lactation period are recommended.- انتشار مقاله: 16-09-1397
