- چکیده انگلیسی: Background: Faculty members are the main sources of universities. Determination and promotion of their competencies lead to the overall performance promotion of universities. Faculty members’ teaching competencies have the greatest role in the improvement of education, research and universities social services quality. Therefore, in order to investigate this issue more carefully, this study aimed to determine the level of teaching competency in medical faculty members and factors affecting it. Methods: This applied research is a descriptive cross-sectional study that was done by stratified probability sampling with 160 medical faculty members as subjects (32 basic science faculty members, 128 clinical science faculty members) in Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, solar year 1390.. Selected items from Alabama University teaching competency self assessment instrument was used as the questionnaire. The data were analyzed with the software SPSS 11.0. Results: The median score of teaching competency was 92.0 with the minimum score of 39.0 and maximum score of 112.0; there was no significant difference between basic and clinical faculty members’ competencies score (p=0/05).The most powerful competency was the classroom management, and students performance evaluation had the lowest score. There was a significant difference between teaching competency scores depending on academic degree (p=0/009), adult education competencies (p=0/02), and marriage (p=0/03). Conclusions: Because of the key role of faculty members in educational system, with the revision of educational plans and policies; we can promote the teaching competencies of teachers.

- چکیده انگلیسی: Background: The aim of current study was to identify the most suitable strategies for faculty development and improving educational potential of faculty members in medical sciences.
Methods: The study was cross-sectional. First, using the literature and with the help of experts, a list of all suitable strategies for faculty development was extracted. Then the questionnaire was created based on that list and after determination of its reliability and validity using retest method (correlation coefficient=0.87) was distributed among 96 faculty members of the faculty of Medicine in the target university whom were selected using random sampling method. The results were then analyzed using descriptive and analytical methods.
Results: The strategies of workshops, observation the excellence performance, short courses and fellowships had the maximum average scores (2.59, 2.51, 2.42 and 2.33), and monitoring the performance of the faculty with the average score of 1.67 was determined to be the lowest average. The results showed that workshop solutions, short-term training courses and Fellowship are related to the faculty members' age groups. (P-Value<0.05).
Conclusion: The results showed that most suitable strategies for improving the educational performance of faculty members included workshops, short-term training courses, fellowships and observation on the best performance.- انتشار مقاله: 14-05-1396

- چکیده انگلیسی: Background: Curriculum design and development are among the key components of medical education. Today, the dominant approach to curriculum planning is the competency-based approach. However, despite the emphasis posed by the medical education scientific community on this approach, medical education in both undergraduate and graduate levels in Iran continues to be delivered traditionally. As it is highly important for infectious diseases specialists to acquire the necessary competencies for the treatment of patients with infectious diseases, this study aimed to identify and present such competencies through localizing the competencies laid down by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) of the United States.
Methods: This study built on ACGME competencies as its point of departure. The Delphi method was used to extract the required items (i.e., competencies) into a questionnaire. When the content and face validity as well as the reliability of the questionnaire was confirmed, copies of the questionnaire were distributed among faculty members, specialists and residents. The items were prioritized according to the scores given by the participants.
Results: According to the results of this study, one general rotation and ten specialized rotations were defined for infectious diseases residents. In each rotation, the expected competencies are enlisted. These competencies are categorized differently in competency-based curricula for the infectious diseases specialty residency programs.
Conclusion: According to characteristics of a competency-based curriculum, accountable physicians can be assuredly expected to be trained according to the requirements of the community in case they are trained within such a program.

- چکیده انگلیسی: Background: Various factors have been found to affect the medicine study and academic performance of medical students, among which the socioeconomic factors seem to have a major role in applicants’ success when they enter medical schools. The purpose of this study was to investigate the socioeconomic status of medical students of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences and to compare it with those of surgical technology, occupational health, and environmental health students.
Methods: Data regarding demographic characteristics, parental education, occupation, income, number of siblings, marital status, and schooling of students were collected by using a questionnaire. Moreover, some data were checked with Students’ Electronic Database of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences.
Results: Medical students have better socioeconomic status than other students (p=0.029). Specifically, they have more educated parents (p≤0.05) with more professional jobs (p<0.039), have fewer siblings (p=0.006) and encounter less economic challenges (p<0.0001). In addition, during their high school education, medical students attended more fee-paying schools than state schools (p<0.0001).
Conclusion: There are obvious socioeconomic differences between medical students and other students in this study. To decrease the inequalities in medical schools, it is important to address socioeconomic issues when considering potential applicants for medical education.- انتشار مقاله: 27-07-1392
